THE CHOIR

MEMBERSHIP

We are always happy to hear from singers who would like to join the choir. We invite all interested newcomers to a rehearsal to let them experience the way we work. If they would then like to join the choir, an audition will be arranged with our musical director. We welcome applicants from all parts.

Please contact our membership secretary to arrange this – mailto:membership@scottishchamberchoir.org.uk

REHEARSALS

The choir rehearses on Monday evenings at 7.15 pm until 9.30 pm in the Dean in Edinburgh’s West End. Occasional workshops are also held throughout the year to develop musicianship and choral ensemble.

With around 30 dedicated singers, the choir has the size and scope to tackle a range of works and to nurture individual and choral skills.

REPERTOIRE

Over its long history the choir has commissioned choral compositions from some of Scotland’s finest composers: John McLeod, James MacMillan, Edward Harper and Kenneth Dempster. The choir is keen to promote the work of young composers – recently commissioning a work by Andrew Carvel.

The Scottish Chamber Choir approaches a wide-ranging repertoire with fresh ideas and an enthusiasm for making new musical connections. Since its formation in 1968 the choir has performed throughout Scotland to great acclaim. The SCC takes pride in singing a broad spectrum of music: ancient to contemporary, sacred and secular, accompanied and a cappella.

Our 50th Anniversary Concert took place on Saturday 15 June, 2019, at Old St Paul’s in Jeffrey Street, Edinburgh. This atmospheric and historic venue resonated to a concert of Scottish choral music through the ages. We explored the national choral repertoire from early plainchant to a brand new commission and dipped into the choir library to include James MacMillan’s visceral Cantos Sagrados which was commissioned by the SCC in 1989 and now enjoys a prominent place in the international choral repertoire.

We hope you enjoyed this celebration of 50 years of creating music in and for Scotland.
